The More That You Know…

“On this day in history, June 21, 1832, Republican Congressman Joseph Hayne Rainey was born. Congressman Rainey, who was born a slave, was the 1st black man to serve in the U.S. Congress.
Rainey, who represented South Carolina’s 1st district, was elected to Congress in 1870 and was known for being a fierce advocate of the Civil Rights A…cts of 1871 and 1875.
On the floor of the House, Rainey said, “I tell you that the Negro will never rest until he gets his rights. We ask because we know it is proper, not because we want to deprive any other class of the rights and immunities they enjoy, but because they are granted to us by the law of the land.”
