The More That You Know…

“On this day in history, May 22, 1856, Republican Senator Charles Sumner was beaten with a walking cane by Democrat Congressman Preston Brooks on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Brooks attacked Sumner because of an anti-slavery speech Sumner delivered for two days before the attack. Sumner suffered from severe head trauma and was unable to return to the Senate for three years.”
